How Often Should You Really Be Getting a Haircut?
If you’ve ever sat in a salon chair and asked your stylist “how often should I really be doing this,” you’ve probably had slightly different answers depending on who you’ve asked. That’s not because anyone’s giving you wrong information, it’s because there genuinely isn’t one correct answer that applies to every head of hair.
At Macadamia Hair Spa in Widnes, this is one of the questions we get asked more than almost any other. So rather than giving you a vague “every six to eight weeks” and leaving it there, we wanted to break down what actually determines how often you should be booking in, because the honest answer depends on more than you might think.
Why There Isn’t a One-Size-Fits-All Answer
Hair grows at roughly the same rate for most people, around half an inch per month on average, but how that growth affects your style varies enormously depending on length, cut, texture and how much shape your style relies on to look its best.
Mid-Length Styles: The Sweet Spot
Mid-length cuts, think shoulder-length bobs, lobs and layered mid-length styles, generally do well with a trim every six to eight weeks. This length gives you a bit more flexibility, as the style can carry a little extra growth before it starts to look unkempt, but regular trims are still important for keeping ends healthy and the shape looking intentional rather than accidental.
Long Hair: More Flexibility, But Don’t Skip It Altogether
This is where things get more interesting, because long hair has the most flexibility of any length, but it’s also the category where people are most likely to skip trims for far too long, often to the detriment of their hair’s overall condition.
For long hair, a trim every eight to twelve weeks is a reasonable general guide, though this can stretch further if your style doesn’t rely on sharp shaping and you’re simply maintaining length. The key thing to understand is that even if your hair looks fine length-wise, the ends are doing the most work and experiencing the most wear, from brushing, styling, weather exposure and general daily life.
Split ends don’t repair themselves. Once hair splits, it will continue splitting further up the strand if left untreated, which is why even clients who are growing their hair out are usually advised to have a small “dusting” trim every couple of months, removing just enough to keep ends healthy without sacrificing length.
Signs Your Hair Is Overdue for a Trim
If you’re not sure whether you’re due, here are a few honest signs to look out for. Your ends are noticeably more frizzy, rough or dry-looking than the rest of your hair. You’re seeing visible split ends, particularly when your hair is dry. Your style has lost its shape and looks more like an undefined version of itself than the cut you originally had. Your hair feels thinner at the ends, even though the length itself hasn’t really changed. Styling is taking longer or your hair simply isn’t behaving the way it used to.
Any one of these on its own isn’t necessarily a sign you need to rush in, but a combination of a few is usually a fairly reliable signal that it’s time.
Does Trimming Hair Actually Help It Grow Faster?
This is a popular myth worth addressing honestly. Trimming hair doesn’t make it grow faster, hair growth happens at the root, and what happens at the ends has no bearing on that process. What regular trims do is prevent breakage and split ends from travelling further up the hair shaft, which means the length you do grow is more likely to stay intact and look healthy rather than being lost to breakage further down the line.
In other words, regular trims won’t speed up growth, but they will help you retain more of the length you’re growing, which often feels like the same thing from a practical, day-to-day perspective.
So, How Often Should You Really Be Booking In?
As a general guide:
Short, structured styles: every four to six weeks. Men’s fades and barber cuts: every three to four weeks. Mid-length styles: every six to eight weeks. Long hair, style-dependent: every eight to twelve weeks. Long hair, growing out: a light dusting trim every eight to twelve weeks.
These are starting points rather than strict rules. Your stylist will be able to give you a much more accurate, personalised recommendation based on your specific hair type, condition and the style you’re working with.
