Three Main Skincare Routine Steps are Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturise. To get the most benefit from your daily skincare routine, you should start with three simple steps. But before you start heading for the bathroom to start a new routine, we want to include a fourth step and that’s Treat.

You are probably all familiar with the first 3 but we will give you a quick overview just in case.

  1. Cleanse – wash your face
  2. Tone – balance your skin
  3. Moisturise – hydrate your skin

Treat – fits in just after Tone and this is the part where you target your problem areas with serums and creams with ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acids. These are the creams that over time can make a big difference to the appearance of your skin.

Step 1 – Cleanse

The first step in any skincare routine is to cleanse your skin properly. This clears away any impurities and excess oil that can clog pores. But be gentle as using products that are too harsh can have the opposite effect and could break down your skin’s protective barrier. So, if you have delicate skin be sure to take care. The best products will gently cleanse your skin without stripping it of healthy oils.

Step 2 – Tone

You don’t necessarily need a toner, but they are refreshing and if you feel your skin is looking particularly dull then they can remove any lingering makeup. Your skin type will dictate the ingredients you are looking for, for example, for oily skin you will need something more astringent to tighten the pores whereas dry or sensitive skin needs something without the alcohol.

Step 3 – Treat

Treating involves different areas of the face depending on the areas you feel need attention.

Firstly serums, these can both treat and protect, from wrinkles to dark spots — and if you have multiple concerns, you can use several different serum formulas. Be sure to read the labels before you use them, as some serums are best used in the morning, while others are ideal at night.

Eye creams are formulated specifically for your delicate eye area, this part of the face ages faster than other parts and definitely falls under the separate category of treat. Dark Circles and puffiness are the other two reasons for concentrating on this area separately.

For dark circles, look for creams with vitamin C. For puffiness look for caffeine-infused cream and for wrinkles try creams with retinol. Remember to be gentle, the skin around the eyes is very delicate, use light taps to gently apply the creams.

Step 4 – Moisturizer

The penultimate step is your moisturiser. Moisturiser hydrates and helps strengthen your skin barrier. Depending on your skin type, you may opt for a lighter moisturiser during the daytime. Apply in an upwards motion, massaging the moisturiser into your skin as you apply it, this will aid with absorption and help improve your circulation.

Step 5 – Sunscreen

If there is one this that dermatologists agree on is that sunscreen is the most important step in your morning skincare routine, no matter your age, skin type, or skin tone, protecting your skin from the sun is incredibly important, not just for aging but for skin health. The minimum you need for your face is SPF30.

Massage a small amount of SPF 30 or higher face sunscreen as the last step in your morning routine, including on your neck, décolletage, and the backs of your hands, at least 30 minutes before you head outside.

So, there’s never been a better time to start a new routine, and remember, good things come to those who wait!
